Ron Johan: Rum from the Volcanic Region

Rum from Styria sounds like a contradiction. It isn’t. The molasses comes from overseas, everything else happens here: fermentation, double distillation, years in oak barrels. In 2018, the first bottle was released under the name Ron Johan.

Both remain in neutral stainless steel tanks, therefore without color and without oak notes. White at 40 percent: tropical fruit on the nose, light acidity, balanced sweetness on the finish. Overproof at 64 percent: the same fruit, plus distinct ester notes and much more power. Both distilled in the spring of 2018. White was awarded gold at the World Rum Awards 2020.

Distilled in multiple vintages since 2012, aged in new and used American white oak and ex-bourbon casks. Smooth, caramelly, creamy on the palate, subtle on the nose. Inspired by the style of Cuban rums, clean and straightforward. No artificial colors, no artificial flavors. 42 percent.

Bottled at cask strength and deliberately fermented a bit "dirtier," which brings out more esters. Powerful, Jamaican style, heavy spice notes, complex caramel, very long finish. Also a gold medal winner at the 2020 World Rum Awards. 55 percent.

American white oak and ex-bourbon, followed by a one-year finish in a used old plum brandy cask from Alois Gölles. The cask asserts itself: plum, dried prune, candied fruits, spicy and mild on the palate. 41 percent.

Organic bourbon vanilla from Madagascar is steeped in rum and added to the dark rum as a reduction. No vanillin, no artificial flavoring. A spiced rum that tastes like what's inside. 38 percent.

Certified organic molasses from Paraguay, aged for three years in American white oak. No added sugar, no artificial additives. Dry, edgy, direct. 42 percent.

Madeira Cask: Organic rum from Paraguay, aged in white oak, then seven months in a Madeira cask. Limited to 1,335 bottles. Port Cask: aged for several years in oak, then 48 months in a port cask, full-bodied and smooth. Limited to 1,162 bottles.

Bottled with no added sugar

For many rums, sugar is added after cask aging. This rounds out the flavor, adds softness, and masks imperfections. Serie Null forgoes this. What remains is exactly what the molasses, yeast, still, and cask provide, without any final correction.
Those who want to know how a distillery operates should taste this bottle.

White, Overproof, Dark, Strong, Old Plum, Vanilla und Serie Null.

Dark und Old Plum trinkt man besser pur.
