Ruotkers Whiskey: Alois, Ruediger, Wilhelm
Three bottlings, three directions: rye in a plum cask, a blend of five grains, peated Scottish barley. The line is named after the castle above the house, which first appeared in records in 1138 as Ruotkerspurch.
Ruotgers Rüdiger II
Ruotgers Wilhelm III
Ruotkers Peated Single Malt
A rye whiskey that matures for a good twelve months in an Old Plum brandy cask from Alois Gölles. Impetuous rye aromas, soft fruit notes from the wood. The father has been distilling his Old Plum for over thirty years, and the cask continues to give back what it has absorbed. 44.9 percent.
A blend of five grains, in the style of a bourbon. Corn and wheat provide softness and chocolate, barley and spelt the spice, rye the long finish. Named after Rüdiger, the lord of the castle, which was first mentioned in documents in 1138 as Ruotkerspurch. 43.3 percent.
Scotland and Austria in one bottle. Finest Scottish barley, heavily peated over peat smoke, processed, distilled, and matured in Riegersburg. American white oak casks. Powerful smoke, rough edges. 46.0 percent.
100% rye, distilled in 2012, bottled at cask strength in 2026, many years in American white oak. 100% corn, twelve years in an ex-Oloroso sherry cask, mild, nutty, almost sweet. Peated single malt with a PX sherry finish, limited to 757 bottles.
Over forty cask types
Whiskey is a well-known craft up to the barrel stage. Fermenting, distilling, storing, waiting. Some of the grain comes from the fields right on the doorstep.
Things get interesting after that. Over forty different types of casks lie in the cellars, with new ones being added all the time. American white oak, Oloroso, PX, plus barrels that previously aged spirits from Alois Gölles for years. As distiller and blender, David Gölles chooses what goes together. There is little that is not tried out.
