The Alte Zwetschke is the brandy that many start with here, and the one many stick with. At least eight years in oak barrels.
It is stored at a high proof of around 70 percent and bottled at 40. In the meantime, the wood goes to work: toast, caramel, and a hint of vanilla are added, the color turns amber, and a portion evaporates.
Milder than the number suggests, with smoke and roasted notes alongside the plum fruit. Best enjoyed at the end of a long meal, with a strong espresso.
